OC2 actually dead before it lived? last commit that i can see was 2
years ago
L90[22:23:07]
<JasonS>
idk about "dead before it lived" but right now it's just
in indefinite maintence mode, no plans for new content or porting
to newer minecraft versions
L91[22:23:26]
<void*> OC2
not OC
L93[22:24:39]
<JasonS> oh
shoot
L94[22:24:44]
<JasonS>
didn't notice you said OC2 not OC lol
L95[22:24:51]
<JasonS>
uhh yeah might be dead before it lived
L96[22:24:57]
<JasonS> I
don't know if OC2 is going anywhere or not
L97[22:25:02]
<JasonS>
I'm under the impression it might not be
L98[22:25:17]
<void*>
yeah i would have really loved that because i would love writing my
code in a compiled language
L99[22:25:38]
<void*>
maybe even get c++ to run on it...
L100[22:26:22]
<JasonS>
honestly I feel like WASM would've been a better fit for OC2 than
RISC-V. RISC-V is too standard and normal. WASM would've kept the
charm of having a computer based on a weird architecture, but still
keeping the benefit of being able to use compiled languages instead
of being stuck to one language (Lua)
L101[22:26:24] <Hawk777> It was on hold
due to a really hard-to-find bug in Sedna which was just found a
week or two ago.
L102[22:26:34]
<JasonS> oh
wow
L103[22:26:44]
<JasonS> so
is it resuming or has too much steam been lost?
L105[22:26:55] <Hawk777> I don’t know what
will happen now.
L107[22:28:27]
<void*> I
actually think WASM would be too standard nowadays... Also i dont
know if OC is really about having a weird system... i thought it
was for adding artificial restrictions on the stuff you can do
(also in the speed regard)
L108[22:28:53]
<void*> i
would enjoy writing efficient c++ applications in it instead of the
not so fast lua ones...
L109[22:29:47] <Hawk777> Personally I
don’t care too much about the choice of architecture, I just want
something where I can use the languages I like, in a way that lets
me control machines inside my MC world.
L110[22:30:04]
<void*>
yeah
L111[22:30:04] <Corded> >
<void*> I actually think WASM would be too standard
nowadays... Als…
L112[22:30:05]
<JasonS>
yeah I know it is standard, but having a computer whose entire
architecture is WASM is very weird, much the same as a computer
whose entire architecture is a Lua VM is also weird. But RISC-V was
meant to be a computer architecture, so it's not weird anymore, and
too normal for me. It makes it feel like I'm playing in QEMU or
something,
L113[22:30:05] <Corded> except now it's
minecraft, and I don't feel like QEMU and minecraft go together
very well
L114[22:30:55]
<JasonS>
with OC1's Lua architecture it felt like I was playing with
something really unique and special, something found nowhere else
in the world
L115[22:30:56]
<void*> the
Lua based system was probably a restriction of the mod being kinda
inspired by ComputerCraft i guess
L116[22:31:09]
<JasonS>
but OC2 just feels like QEMU
L117[22:31:13] <Hawk777> I do think it’s a
bit weird running Linux inside Minecraft personally. It’s not about
CPU architecture, it’s about the fact that most of the jobs I do
are things that feel more on the scale of a bare-metal embedded
system.
L118[22:31:20]
<void*> im
fine with qemu
L119[22:31:25] <Hawk777> Things I’d use a
microcontroller for in real life.
L120[22:31:28] <Hawk777> Not a PC.
L121[22:31:48]
<JasonS>
yeah I don't have any issue with QEMU, it's just that for me most
of the fun of OC1 was being something unique, and if OC2 is just a
QEMU clone that's not unique anymore
L122[22:32:34]
<void*> i
work as a c++ developer for huge old multi platform GUI
applications. We develop stuff on linux so i probably prefer it
being like qemu
L123[22:32:49] <Corded> >
<Hawk777> I do think it’s a bit weird running Linux inside
Minecraft …
L124[22:32:49]
<JasonS>
yeah I also don't like the Linux idea. A lot of the fun for me was
creating a whole operating system from scratch since the hardware
architecture was strange enough to not support anything mainstream.
But now that's it's just RISC-V you can put linux on and now it's
boring
L125[22:33:05]
<void*>
well it is pretty unique because its in minecraft and the computers
still have to be powered and stuff...
L126[22:33:07]
<JasonS> *
how OC1 had a whole operating system from scratch since the
hardware architecture was strange enough to not support anything
mainstream. But now that's it's just RISC-V you can put linux on
and now it's boring
L127[22:33:14]
<JasonS> *
created a whole operating system from scratch since the hardware
architecture was strange enough to not support anything mainstream.
But now that's it's just RISC-V you can put linux on and now it's
boring
L128[22:33:36]
<JasonS>
yeah but that's all trivial
L129[22:33:56]
<void*> its
less trivial than comparable mods... ( CC )
L130[22:33:57]
<JasonS>
and power was never the main focus of the mod, just a way to
vaguely incorporate it into a modpack
L131[22:34:21] <Hawk777> Personally I just
want something that can control things which are complicated enough
to be painful with redstone or even Project Red ICs (or whatever
has since replaced them). And TBH the reason I’m here rather than
using CC is because CC losing state every time the chunk unloads is
a pain.
L132[22:34:36]
<void*> i
would just enjoy having a system that can actually handle GUI's
(alby text based) efficiently...
L133[22:34:53]
<JasonS> at
this point OC1 can do that too, with VRAM
L134[22:34:57]
<void*> CC
has no cost, no progression... too boring
L135[22:35:15]
<JasonS>
yeah CC is really boring
L136[22:35:27]
<JasonS>
the operating system is builtin
L137[22:35:35]
<JasonS>
but with OC1 it's all there in the filesystem
L138[22:35:48]
<JasonS>
ditch that and now you have no OS, just bare metal
L139[22:36:10]
<void*> but
you cant really access berkly socket based networking
L140[22:36:17]

L142[22:36:27] <Corded> >

L143[22:36:28]
<JasonS>
yeah true lol
L144[22:36:30]
<JasonS>
but BIOS is tiny anyway
L145[22:36:34] <Hawk777> Yep.
L146[22:37:26] <Corded> >
<void*> but you cant really access berkly socket based
networking
L147[22:37:26]
<JasonS>
you can't? Surely it can be set up in OC1
L148[22:38:09]
<void*>
maybe but i dont wanna bother with deliberately recreating
sockets
L149[22:38:26]
<void*>
they would also be a pain in lua probably
L150[22:38:44]
<JasonS>
yeah fair
L151[22:38:46] <Hawk777> The Internet card
has TCP, but it’s not exactly the same API.
L152[22:38:53]
<void*>
yeah...
L153[22:39:27]
<void*>
also multithreading would be nice...
L154[22:39:36]
<void*> i
mean... it exists... somewhat
L155[22:39:50]
<JasonS>
yeah preempting would be nice
L156[22:40:06]
<JasonS> as
it is you have to constantly yield or else an infinite loop will
halt the whole computer
L157[22:40:17]
<void*>
yeah...
L158[22:42:24]
<void*> if
i could write c++ for OC i could also take some things i wrote
before and just put it into the game... like QuadTree's ... and the
MultiUserMultiTouch interface system i wrote...
L159[22:42:51]
<void*> i
have no idea how i would use multi touch there... but still
L160[22:44:43]
<JasonS>
you could probably transpile WASM to Lua
L161[22:44:47]
<JasonS>
and compile C++ to WASM
L162[22:45:39]
<void*>
maybe..
L163[22:46:06] <Hawk777> I considered
that, but didn’t find any existing WASM-to-Lua tools, whereas there
is Asmble which converts WASM to JVM bytecode, which is what
OC-Wasm uses under the hood, so adding a proper OC architecture
seemed likely to be less work.
L164[22:46:09] <Hawk777> And also
faster.
