That is exactly why
L254[22:00:54] <Amanda> \o/ Apparently my

*months* and I only noticed now because my new laptop's backlight
is brighter than the sun

for things?
L257[22:02:19]
<MGR> I
wouldn't
L258[22:02:40] <Izaya> I'm thinking like,
scratch disk, for game files
L259[22:03:49] <Izaya> Can always download
shit like ARK, and it compresses down to small enough to fit on an
SSD, but it'd make it load a hell of a lot faster.
L261[22:17:33] <Liizzii> Izaya, if you
want to use it to store data that isn't easilly replacable, put it
in some form of mirrored raid (BTRFS or ZFS, something that can do
FS-level checks and not block-level checks). if it's just a scratch
disk, it should be fine(tm) till it eventually dies outright
L262[22:18:11] <Liizzii> granted you live
down-under so trying to get another of the same drive is probably
not ideal
L263[22:19:10] <Izaya> 128GB SSDs are
cheap and common
L264[22:19:13] <Liizzii> I've lost too
much stuff to single drive system failures that everything is now
backed up on redundant storage, and machines that only have one
drive back up to said redundant storage frequently

L267[22:19:29] <Izaya> would it be safe to
use it as a cache? is there anything that deals gracefully with
errors?
L268[22:19:58] <Liizzii> err, would depend
on what is going to be managing the cache / how it's used
L269[22:20:46] <Liizzii> not sure about
the btrfs side of things, kinda stopped using it a while back. ZFS
will complain but *should* keep using it, though if it accrues too
many i think ZFS will just stop using it
L270[22:22:32] <Izaya> ZFS isn't in the
kernel so I can't be bothered
L271[22:23:08] <Liizzii> yeah, that might
be a show stopper
L272[22:23:40] <Liizzii> I've just gotten
used to using it since proxmox uses it
L273[22:26:07] <Liizzii> never could
figure out how to do snapshots properly on btrfs, and the tools (at
the time) just felt clunky. zfs just seems more natural to me
now
