Hey, sorry if this isn't the right channel, I'm trying to learn how
to send messages between OC machines - found minitel and was hoping
there was some example code to learn from (I found Izaya's mmail

L379[14:47:08]
<Optional opt
= null;> using a network or linked card?
L380[14:47:36]
<chrisms>
Linked card put in a relay - I'm trying to hook a lot of machines
up in a master/slave config so I want everyone to see
everybroadcast regardless of distance on the server
L381[14:48:26]
<Optional opt
= null;> > want everyone to see every broadcast regardless of
distance on the server
L382[14:48:26]
<Optional opt
= null;> why not a) wireless cards or b) cables?
L383[14:49:06]
<chrisms>
Wireless cards have a limit on their range, right? And cable is too
far - I'd have to have too many chunks loaded. I'm trying to
automate something across a fairly large distance
L384[14:49:56]
<chrisms>
So I was trying to use the creative channel linked cards to allow
for multiple machines to all read/write to the same bus if you
will
L385[14:52:15]
<Optional opt
= null;> what did you mean by "linked card put in a
relay"? a special computer/server just for broadcasting
messages?
L386[14:53:55]

Basically, yes - I'm hoping to have a central server that's
broadcasting to multiple machines
L387[14:54:55]
<Forecaster> linked cards work in
relays
L388[14:55:47]
<chrisms>
Yes, my problem is I am trying to learn how to use them properly,
and am looking for example code to learn from
L389[14:56:27]
<chrisms> I
found Izaya's code but it's so high level I'm completely lost; was
hoping there was some examples of just basics
L390[14:56:56]
<Forecaster> just use the basic
networking
L391[14:58:30]
<chrisms>
I'd rather learn the minitel API since that has the acknowledgment
built in, I'd not have to code that myself
L392[14:59:41]
<Z0idberg>
Speaking of minitel I need to work on trotwood a little and finish
its port to Satisfactory's Lua computer mod, then finish the
luasocket driver for it so that I can connect Satisfactory and OC
together.
L393[15:01:17]
<Z0idberg>

L394[15:02:52]

the trotwood OS for OC is pullSignal anyways. The rest is just
stubs / drivers that aren't in the kernel itself

L432[16:01:22] <Izaya> the FRequest client

<chrisms>
Yes, see, that assumption... not a great one for me :-p
L438[16:05:13] <Izaya> Well, is a stream
or events more convenient for you? Minitel can do both.
L439[16:05:18]
<chrisms>
^^ basically a child when it comes to programming 🙂
L440[16:05:38]
<chrisms> I
think events would be from what I understand
L441[16:06:10] <Izaya> individual
packets?
L442[16:07:45]
<chrisms>
Yes, I'm looking to only send small packets fairly infrequently -
but trying to do so in a way that a master server gets packets from
multiple machines (linked creative card I think will work here?) -
and then send back a response packet with a small amount of data to
those 'slave' machines
L443[16:08:15] <Izaya> Simple enough to
use like that; you can use minitel.send(host,port,data) to send a
reliable message to a given host, which can receive them by waiting
or listening for net_msg events, along the lines of etype, from,
port, data = event.pull("net_msg")
L444[16:10:30]
<chrisms>
Ah, so I need to use event.pull not event.listen? that maybe is my
problem
L445[16:10:41] <Izaya> event.listen can
work fine too
L446[16:10:50]
<chrisms> I
can send the packet, seemingly - as it eventually times out and
returns false; but I can't receive on the other machine
L447[16:11:08] <Izaya> What's your network
look like?
L448[16:11:31]
<chrisms> I
have a dummy stupid set up right now - just two machines next to
each other, each with a relay and a creative linked card in
it;
L450[16:12:15]
<chrisms>
(I'm literally just trying to get the basics as you can see; slowly
building up)
L451[16:12:23] <Izaya> I should note that
due to Reasons involving addressing that it doesn't support going
relay with card <-> computer
L452[16:12:46] <Izaya> so you can't use
wireless or linked cards in a relay to talk directly to a computer
with a wireless or linked cards
L453[16:13:14]
<chrisms>
oh... huh. So then I have to choose between a linked card or a
graphics card ?
L454[16:13:25] <Izaya> you can use a
computer as a router
L455[16:14:38] <Izaya> but the daemon
tries to reduce broadcast traffic where possible by sending to the
first sender with a given hostname, and when you use a wireless
card or linked card in a relay the computer tries to send a message
to the relay and nothing gets through
L456[16:14:45] <Izaya> computer to
computer and relay to relay is fine
L457[16:14:50] <Izaya> but not computer to
relay and the reverse
L458[16:15:25]
<chrisms>
Ah, okay, so I essentially need to send the 'router' PC the data -
who will then use the minitel send, to a router machine who will
then forward it to the actual machine I want to receive the
data
L459[16:15:42] <Izaya> or you could have a
relay with a linked cards on both (all?) ends
L460[16:16:06] <Izaya> and you don't have
to explicitly send the router anything
L461[16:16:36] <Izaya> messages will be
repeated automatically through computers with multiple network
cards
L463[16:18:17]
<chrisms>
Sorry, I think I'm confused now - what do you mean by relay on both
ends, I'm confused with what you said a bit ago with you can't have
relay with a card to computer on both ends
L464[16:18:26]
<chrisms>
you mean stand-alone relays acting as a mesh?
L465[16:18:38] <Izaya> yeah
L466[16:19:14] <MichiBot> Amanda REMINDER:
stop production of Matthews
L467[16:19:40] <Izaya> so you know how you
can put a card in a relay
L468[16:19:51] <Izaya> and that will let
it send using that card instead of just wired connections?
L469[16:20:00]
<chrisms>
yeah
L470[16:20:18] <Izaya> minitel does not
cope gracefully when you connect a relay to a computer using that
functionality
L471[16:20:36] <Izaya> but it does cope
fine when you connect a relay to a relay, with a wireless card or
linked card
L472[16:21:01] <Izaya> so you can have
computer <-> relay < shared ether, linked card or wireless
> relay <-> computer
L474[16:21:41] <Izaya> Skye: they look
sad
L475[16:22:06]
<Kristopher38> is that a toblerone train
Izaya?
L476[16:22:10] <Izaya> yees
L477[16:22:19]
<chrisms>
ah, okay. So it's not possible to have a single computer with both
a screen and wireless connectivity? Or can the modem component take
linked cards... For some reason I thuoght I had to use a relay with
linked cards; firing up the world to see if modems will solve the
problem
L478[16:22:41] <Izaya> dependent on what
slots you have available
L479[16:23:06] <Izaya> a T3 case can have
wireless and a T3 graphics card
L480[16:23:30] <Izaya> but with a T2 case
you have to choose between wireless networking and T2 video
card
L481[16:23:32]
<chrisms>
Ah, maybe I'm just an idiot then. I tried to put a linked card into
a T3 case and it would only slot in where the graphics card sotted
in
L482[16:23:46] <Izaya> I think linked
cards are T3?
L483[16:23:51] <Izaya> T3 case has 1 T3
slot
L484[16:23:51]
<Kristopher38> yeah they are
L485[16:24:04]
<chrisms>
Oh, so T2 graphics, got it
L486[16:24:06]
<Kristopher38> @chrisms you can
"put" the graphics card into a CPU
L487[16:24:12] <Izaya> ^ is also a good
option
L488[16:24:13]
<Kristopher38> making it an APU
L489[16:24:34]
<Kristopher38> that doesn't take up extra
slots or complexity limits when assembling a
robot/drone/whatever
L490[16:24:41]
<chrisms>
ahhhh okay!
L491[16:24:49]
<chrisms>
Thank you guys so mcuh that may fix my problems entirely
L492[16:24:50] <Izaya> It does limit the
graphics card to one tier below the CPU though
L493[16:24:58]
<chrisms>
I'm going to go try that 🙂
L494[16:25:03]
<chrisms>
So basically no touch screen + linked card
L495[16:25:06]
<chrisms> I
can live iwth that hah
L496[16:25:21] <Izaya> the touch
functionality is in the screen, as I remember it
L497[16:25:37] <Izaya> you'll lose
resolution and colour depth though
L498[16:25:51]
<chrisms>
ah awesome - thanks so much! I really appreciate it 🙂
L499[16:26:08] *
Izaya likes to run a T2 case with a T2 APU, T2 GPU, network card
and 256-512K of RAM for PsychOS
L500[16:26:12]
<chrisms>
hopefully I'll have something awesome to share in (months?) that
you can laugh at the crummy coding :-p
L501[16:26:31] <Izaya> feel free to ping
me if you have any issues
L502[16:26:54]
<chrisms>
Thanks so much, really appreciate the help. This mod is so
incredible yet so deep... makes it hard for a biologist hah
L503[16:27:38] <Izaya> there's a link to
the SKS IRC channel in the Minitel readme if I'm not around also,
there's a few other people that should be able to help
L504[16:27:50]
<Kristopher38> what are you planning to
make btw?
L505[16:28:04] <Izaya> man I need to test
those PRs >.>
L506[16:28:59]
<chrisms>
Trying to automate an immersive railroading network (I... I like
trains...). I had done similar with railcraft, but that mod had
"black occupancy detection" which IR doesn't have, so I
have to have a main server tracking block occupancy.
L507[16:29:10] <Izaya> ooo
L508[16:29:19]
<chrisms>
but IR is such a freaking awesome visual mod, I wanna give it a
go
L509[16:29:29] <Izaya> There was someone
else here doing train routing with OpenComputers
L510[16:29:31]
<chrisms>
Haven't played MC in... almost 5 years now, but IR re-lit my love
for it
L511[16:29:39] <Izaya> stick around and
they might announce themselves
L512[16:29:43]
<chrisms>
Was it an "andrew" by chance?
L513[16:30:10]
<chrisms>
I'll def stick around:) Maybe in a month or so I'll have something
worth showing off hah
L514[16:30:16]
<chrisms> I
have big plans... Small brain, but big plans
L515[16:31:07]
<Kristopher38> i think @Bob did something
with railcraft and OC 🤔
L516[16:31:28]
<Bob> been
a year ive touched MC entirely
L517[16:31:47]
<Bob> i did
do a small outpost station to manage my NC reactor but i aint got
half of my scripts online
L518[16:32:08] <Elfi> Does IR have a
resource pack for more MC-looking models yet?
L520[16:34:30]
<Kristopher38> god damn, immersive
railroading looks awesome
L521[16:35:52]
<chrisms>
It really does. It's so freaking cool. Only thing missing is the
advanced routing and such; but that hopefully can be done with OC
🙂

Sorry for being a massive pain... I managed to figure out how to
send the data - I can see the message coming through as a
net_broadcast event with the sendername, port, and data - but how
do I, on the receiving end - send the acknowledge packet? Also, is
it expected that I should have "modem message" events
between the modems with no data just periodically happening? I
assume that's a heartbeat but it doesn't seem to stop
L597[20:29:43] <dequbed> Well to be fair
it'd be kinda worrying if heartbeats suddenly stop, wouldn't
it?

maybe, but it only starts when i try to send a message; but then
