L157[19:20:45] <Althego> hehe
L158[19:21:15] <Althego> i never had a
great experience with nvidia drivers under linux either
L159[19:21:34] <umaxtu> fglrx was even
worse
L160[19:22:29] <umaxtu> from what I've
heard, AMD's linux drivers are awesome these days
L161[19:23:29] <Althego> in return the
nvidia adapter cable catches fire
L162[19:28:39] <FLHerne> SporkWitch: the
AMD drivers have been great on Linux for at least 5 years now
L163[19:28:54] <FLHerne> unless you need
compute, anyway
L164[19:29:04] <FLHerne> or raytracing
:p
L165[19:33:04] <Althego> raytracing in
games is still not really ready
L166[19:33:22] <SporkWitch> i've never had
issues with the proprietary nvidia binaries since around the GTX260
era. That was when I made the switch to pure nvidia, because the
Radeon X1800XT was a 600 dollar card at the time, with drivers so
bad that some of the most popular games at the time (such as
PlanetSide) caused hard crashes (as in not just CTD, but literally
"disconnect power, everything's dead").
L167[19:33:58] <FLHerne> that's a very
long way back
L168[19:34:59] <FLHerne> In the last few
years Nvidia blob has been a total nuisance if you have Wayland, or
a machine with multiple GPUs that aren't all Nvidia (like many
laptops)
L169[19:35:17] <FLHerne> or like to run
the latest kernel
L170[19:35:27] <SporkWitch> i've seen
nothing to indicate it's improved enough to be worth switching
back. With the Ryzen / Threadripper CPUs and associated GPUs, AMD's
finally pulled their proverbial head out of their butt and are
putting out good hardware again after their misguided APU
obsession, but I still just haven't seen anything to make me trust
their drivers.
L171[19:35:44] <SporkWitch> honestly,
weyland has always been hell for me in itself, so i just don't use
it lol
L172[19:37:41] <SporkWitch> that said,
i've been forced to run windows for the time being because of a
couple games i just cannot get behaving in linux. I'll need to
upgrade my PSU if I want to stick my GTX1060 back in as a second
card for pass-through, though I'm not sure it'll be enough, because
before installing Windows as the host OS, I was trying to get it
working in a VM and it feels like MS did some sabotage to
L173[19:38:24] <SporkWitch> ensure windows
VMs are totally unusable unless using a windows host and hyper-v;
literally just sitting at the desktop was a slideshow, with a Ryzen
9 3950x (half the cores assigned to VM) and 64GB of RAM
assigned.
L174[19:38:38] <FLHerne> I mean, since the
X1800 days it's not "improved"
L175[19:38:56] <FLHerne> the current,
open-source, driver stack didn't *exist* then
L176[19:39:08] <FLHerne> at least in any
usable form
L177[19:39:29] <FLHerne> fglrx didn't
evolve into anything, it just became obsolete and eventually
died
L178[19:39:37] <SporkWitch> everything
i've ever heard about the open source drivers is that they're than
AMD's proprietary ones, but not by much
L179[19:39:55] <SporkWitch> *better than
AMD's
