Has anybody tried making fully computer-controlled roundabouts (or
other kinds of interchanges) for railcraft trains? No signals or
signal boxes, only digital detectors at entries, "any"
detectors at exits and redstone IO at actuators and locking
tracks.
L15[05:17:21] <Hawk777> I started on a
similar project a long long time ago. I was going to use RC boxes
(the ones that work like block signals but just the blocks that go
under the tracks instead of actual lamps) to detect train presence
or absence within regions of track, rather than just detecting
trains passing specific points, but otherwise the idea was pretty
much what you described. Though I was building a large network, so
I also used the RC boxes as a
L16[05:17:21] <Hawk777> to get wireless
redstone (since I didn’t have any other wireless redstone mod
installed at the time).
L17[05:18:00] <Hawk777> Sadly that server
became completely empty of other people shortly after I started
working on it, and I lost the motivation to finish the job.
L18[05:20:20] <Hawk777> My idea wasn’t to
have separate systems per junction, rather a single computer
controlling the whole network, with a lot of I/O.
L19[05:30:32]

<vftdan>
I'm considering no central node, and for long-distance
communication use Minitel's packet switching
L20[05:31:08] <Hawk777> Yep, a computer per
junction would definitely also work. You’d just need to sort out a
protocol for doing handoffs of train data from one to the
next.
L21[05:31:33] <Hawk777> I chose a single
central computer because I thought it would make it easier to debug
the system if everything was in one place.

L75[18:00:16]

<Breakdown>
I usually come into these kinds of discords for inspiration on my
own projects, so it's kinda annoying that people spam the bot
in the mod channel instead of using the dedicated bot channel
😭
L76[18:00:31]

<Breakdown>
this discord also just feels kinda barebones compared to the CC
one
L77[18:01:55] <Hawk777> Yeah, I’m not a fan
of the bot stuff either, but whatever. I’m not in charge around
here. I suppose probably more people use CC than OC, which would
explain the difference.
L78[19:16:29]

<Forecaster> I'm not sure more
channels (there used to be more) or less activity would help in any
way
L79[19:20:09] <Hawk777> Personally, there’s
enough tonking to be a slight drain on my time as I see a new
message in the channel and come over to see what it is only to see
that it’s yet another tonk (compared to other very-low-traffic
channels where that kind of thing doesn’t happen), but not enough
to make me actually take the time to figure out how to ignore those
messages. But *shrug*.
L80[19:20:44] <Hawk777> Not annoying enough

L85[19:29:29] <Hawk777> Sure, I’m not
saying it would increase mod discussion. Just that it would
decrease annoyance to the lurkers who would rather see nothing,
than see messages *not* about the mod.
L86[19:37:16]

<RedstoneParkour> i suppose one could set

L103[22:06:48] <Izzy> It seems simple*
enough but I don't know what knock on effects it might
have
L104[22:06:56] <Lizzy> also it's
limitation of needing to be bound to a physical block, and having a
default range of 128 blocks is kinda bleh
L105[22:07:52] <Lizzy> i sometimes think
about looking into how hard it'd be to port OC-Minecarts to
1.12.2, cause i think those have some control over the train
they're in which could be an interesting substitute
L106[22:08:52] <Lizzy> hmm, could also set
up some form of store-and-forward messaging system. then use the
trains travelling over the world to relay messages
long-distance
L107[22:09:44] <Hawk777> You mean if each
train had a chunkloader or something, so that as it moved it would
load two adjacent junctions’ computers? That would be an
interesting idea.
L108[22:10:10] <Lizzy> nah, the OC
Minecarts mod essentially puts a computer in a cart
L109[22:10:19] <Hawk777> Oh! I didn’t know
