<Forecaster> delightful as always
L95[14:20:21] <Amanda> Hrm. How do devices
behave if you give them dhcp4 assigned DNS servers but not DHCP6?
Or that SLAAC protocol for ips
L96[14:20:42] <Amanda> Do they query aaaa
over the dhcp4 Dns servers?
L97[14:21:43] <Amanda> Thinking how I want
to handle my device database, and the fact that there's no nat for
ipv6, so I can have my pihole identify devices properly do it knows
what rules to apply
L98[14:22:29] <Amanda> Without having to
update the rules every time my ipv6 prefix changes, as Verizon
seems to like doing more often than my v4 ip
L99[14:25:35] <Amanda> Is there an RFC
describing how that should work?
L100[14:26:06] <Amanda> Ping stephan48 and
nadja for questioning
L101[14:28:47] <stephan48> blub, yes
devices will

happily query the nameservers they get, be it v4/v6/both
L103[14:29:23] <Amanda> Excellent
L104[14:29:29] <stephan48> so if they only
get v6 nameservers they will query them for A/AAAA records
L105[14:29:44] <Amanda> Guess I need to
modify my router to not send dns servers for v6 as well
L106[14:29:49] <stephan48> why?
L107[14:30:10] <Amanda> Well, at the
moment it's sending the pihole's v6 address, which makes the v6
queries hard to identify the source of
L108[14:30:20] <stephan48> ahh
L109[14:30:20] <Amanda> I guess I could
change it to send the v4 address? Maybe?
L110[14:30:29] <stephan48> not really
tbh.
L111[14:30:52] <stephan48> you can disable
privacy extensions to have a stable DHCP v6/SLAAC ip address but
usually you do not want that
L112[14:31:35] <Amanda> yeah, I'm not even
sure how the router assigns the v6 address range. I nkow it's
getting the range from upstream via prefix delegation though
L113[14:31:53] <stephan48> yup, thats fun
btw :P you can easily delegate it downstream too
L114[14:32:18] <Amanda> Funnily enough
recently (last couple months) apparently unifi changed the default
from dhcpv6 to SLAAC since android doesn't do dhcpv6 right/at
all
L115[14:32:28] <stephan48> yea
L116[14:32:33] <Amanda> which totally
broke my pihole over dhcp because it nolonger had the /128
L117[14:32:39] <stephan48> meh :(
L118[14:33:26] <stephan48> for my own
device registry(preliminarily it will be netbox/LDAP) i use the
SLAAC addresses, i disable privacy extensions on my debian
VMs
L119[14:34:11] <stephan48> dnsmasq has a
uncanny way to match SLAAC addresses to devices/hostnames. sadly i
don't thing it will do this for the privacy extension random
ipv6ses
L120[14:39:27] <Amanda> bah, unifi's
inserting it's link-local ip if I leave the dns fields blank
L121[14:43:10] <Amanda> Link-local's based
on MAC isn't it? I have the mac for all my devices in my database,
could I use the link-local IP of my pihole instead?
L122[14:44:29] <Amanda> Appears not?
Damn,
L123[15:06:16] <Amanda> Hrm, I wonder how
well this will work, gave the pihole's link-local address, but
apparently the pihole isn't listening on that address, so it'll
just time out

you're opening connections, but never closing them. You then exceed
the setting for max connectionxs
L210[20:59:05]
<Forsaken
Maiden> Yeah, but how do the connections close?
L211[20:59:19]
<Forsaken
Maiden> I know I am opening them but how am I supposed to close
them? Docs never address this ever!
L212[20:59:48] <Michiyo> by.. calling...
close?
L213[20:59:58]
<Forsaken
Maiden> One moment
L214[21:00:09]
<Forsaken
Maiden> like request.close(), right?
L215[21:00:17]
<Forsaken
Maiden> because if yes, I already tried it
L216[21:00:50] <Liizzii> think it might
need the `:` syntax? so like `request:close()`
L219[21:01:38]
<Forsaken
Maiden> same result if result:close() or result.close8)
L220[21:02:06]
<Forsaken
Maiden> The only time it is ever mentioned in the docs is when
it closes a internet.open("example.com",
"1337") connection
L223[21:02:29] <Liizzii> hmm, does the
same error get thrown on first run of that function? or only after
a few?
L224[21:02:39]
<Forsaken
Maiden> when close() on the first
L225[21:02:50] <Liizzii> i meant the too
many connections one
L226[21:02:57]
<Forsaken
Maiden> after like five or six
L227[21:03:03] <Liizzii> hmm
L228[21:03:04] <Michiyo> Can you show your
entire current function?
L229[21:03:05]
<Forsaken
Maiden> but my webserver registers none in the logs
L230[21:03:13] <Corded> > <Forsaken
Maiden>
L231[21:03:14]
<Forsaken
Maiden> that is the entire function
L232[21:03:17]
<Forsaken
Maiden> or what do you mean?
L233[21:03:48] <Michiyo> The one, right
now, with the changes you made? I assume you're not actually trying
to connect to example.com on port 1337
L235[21:04:25]
<Forsaken
Maiden> It requires a POST request so opening it in the browser
doesn't work
L236[21:04:51] <Michiyo> Right... so I
want to see the code that you are using to make that request, with
the close that you added, in theory at line 100
L238[21:05:41] <Michiyo> Thank you, one
second.
L239[21:09:17]
<Forsaken
Maiden> When I remove close(), it errors on line 95
L240[21:09:56]
<Forsaken
Maiden> for testing purposes, you can try adding the parameter
action valued home
L242[21:10:44]
<Forsaken
Maiden> I changed the server so it also gets GET-requests and
not only POST ones, but that doesn't change anything. The computer
doesn't even reach the server as the logs don't show any new
connection
L243[21:11:13] <Michiyo> Ok, so
internet.request should close when the request finishes... are you
killing the script then re-running it because it hangs or
something?
L244[21:11:45]
<Forsaken
Maiden> I don't think I am killing it anywhere... or does the
for-loop kill it?
L245[21:12:35] <Michiyo> Well, how many
lines are in this addresses.txt? I'm wondering if you're just
trying to spam open too many connections in one go.
L246[21:12:57]
<Forsaken
Maiden> currently, only eight
L247[21:13:10]
<Forsaken
Maiden> but the api itself can handle hundreds of requests at
one time
L248[21:13:16] <Michiyo> The default is
4
L249[21:13:22] <Michiyo> 4 connections
open per internet card.
L250[21:13:32]
<Forsaken
Maiden> How can I check when the connection is closed?
L251[21:13:48]
<Forsaken
Maiden> If I could know that, it would be easier than simply
calling os.sleep()
L252[21:14:08] <Michiyo> The connection is
closed, when the request returns
L253[21:14:28] <Michiyo> So you need to
see if request has data, if so continue
L254[21:14:41] <Michiyo> because if
request has data, the connection should be closed.
L255[21:15:00] <Michiyo> .close is only
needed on internet.socket, that was my bad.
L256[21:15:03]
<Forsaken
Maiden> would I do this like this:
L257[21:15:03]
<Forsaken
Maiden> if request then
L258[21:15:08]
<Forsaken
Maiden> wait
L260[21:18:08]
<Forsaken
Maiden> sorry, i am not that good in lua
L261[21:18:14]
<Forsaken
Maiden> so I have no idea what to do now exactly
L262[21:19:35]
<Forsaken
Maiden> while not request do?
L264[21:21:57]
<Forsaken
Maiden> Ooh!
L265[21:22:03]
<Forsaken
Maiden> At least I don't get an error this time
L266[21:22:09]
<Forsaken
Maiden> But does the server get the request
L267[21:23:05]
<Forsaken
Maiden> YEAH IT DOES
L268[21:23:21]
<Forsaken
Maiden> thank you 😭 😭
L269[21:24:06]
<Forsaken
Maiden> You should change the docs and add something like that
this will wait for the request to finish before doing anything
else
L270[21:24:25]
<Forsaken
Maiden> Because the part after that that said os.sleep may break
the request was like a puzzle to me
L271[21:24:26]
<Liizzii-chan> they could be clearer,
yeah
L272[21:24:28]
<Forsaken
Maiden> 💖
L273[21:24:36] <Corded> >
<Liizzii> they could be clearer, yeah
L274[21:24:36]
<Forsaken
Maiden> Still thanks a lot!!!!!!
L275[21:24:37] <Michiyo> I mean, the error
message tells you what the problem is. And this is literally the
first time I've ever seen anyone run into it soooo *shrug*
L276[21:25:09]
<Forsaken
Maiden> xd
L277[21:25:26]
<Forsaken
Maiden> > I mean, the error message tells you what the
problem is
L278[21:25:26]
<Forsaken
Maiden> Yeah, but nothing tells me the solution xd
L279[21:25:46] <Michiyo> The solution was
to stop opening so many connections at once.
L280[21:25:48]
<Forsaken
Maiden> And as somebody who is not a native english speaker, the
docs are a little cryptic at times haha
L281[21:26:57] <Michiyo> But then again,
I'm a programmer, not a doc writer.
L282[21:27:01] <Michiyo> we're not good at
the latter.
L283[21:27:13]
<Forsaken
Maiden> i can relate
L284[21:27:29]
<Forsaken
Maiden> writing docs is always something a dev cannot to
properly (most of the times)
L285[21:27:34] <Liizzii> sometimes not
even those who wrote the code know how it works
L286[21:27:42]
<Forsaken
Maiden> i know 😭
L287[21:28:28] <Liizzii> every time i look
at old code i'm like "the fuck why am i doing it that
way?" and then spend 3 hours re-writing it, get burnt out then
not touch it for a month and repeat the cycle
L288[21:28:39] <Michiyo> "When I
wrote this code only god and I know how it worked... now only god
does"
L289[21:28:49]
<Forsaken
Maiden> i don't even rewrite it most of the times because it
simply works and does its job hahaha
L290[21:28:50] <Michiyo> One of my fav
comments from some code I read
L291[21:29:04] <Michiyo>
s/know/knew/
L292[21:29:04] <MichiBot> <Michiyo>
"When I wrote this code only god and I knew how it worked...
now only god does"
L293[21:29:24] <Corded> >
<Michiyo> One of my fav comments from some code I read
L294[21:29:24]
<Forsaken
Maiden> i don#t even bother making comments anymore xd
L295[21:30:59] <Liizzii> i've actually
started to put comments in my code so i know what i was working on
when i last looked at a project.... then i go more than a month in
between and can nolonger remember any of my thought processes from
when i wrote that comment
L296[21:31:12]
<Forsaken
Maiden> hahahaha
L297[21:31:23] <Liizzii> and that's if
i've left myself a detailed comment
L298[21:31:27]
<Forsaken
Maiden> fortunately, i got a good memory so i can remember at
least that
L299[21:31:28] <Liizzii> not just
"continue rewrite"
L300[21:31:50] <Michiyo> I'm looking at
OpenFM code... from 7+ years ago
L301[21:32:11]
<Forsaken
Maiden> rip
L302[21:57:29]
<Forsaken
Maiden> okay, so it's me again
L303[21:57:36]
<Forsaken
Maiden> O.o
L304[21:58:01]
<Forsaken
Maiden> with another problem xD
L305[21:59:23]
<Forsaken
Maiden> I want to use the stuff that the request returns
L306[22:00:52]
<Forsaken
Maiden> after waiting for the request to finish and close
L307[22:01:15]
<Forsaken
Maiden> or does something like print() wait for the request to
finish automatically?
L309[22:02:21]
<Forsaken
Maiden> ah, i used the old wiki
L310[22:02:25]
<Forsaken
Maiden> me stuoopid
L312[22:03:39]
<Forsaken
Maiden> i know, i used the github wiki
L313[22:03:50]
<Forsaken
Maiden> i always double check both wikis and this time i missed
this
L314[22:03:56]
<Forsaken
Maiden> :feelsbadman:
L315[22:03:57]
<Liizzii-chan> we have a gitlab
wiki?
L316[22:04:02]
<Forsaken
Maiden> github
L317[22:04:03]
<Forsaken
Maiden> yeah
L318[22:04:03]
<Liizzii-chan> err
L319[22:04:06]
<Liizzii-chan> yeah that
L321[22:04:14]
<Forsaken
Maiden> I love github
L322[22:04:18]
<Liizzii-chan> huh, ok
L323[22:04:21]
<Forsaken
Maiden> that's why I preferably chose this xd
L324[22:04:48] <Amanda> At least it's not
a ducking discord thread
L325[22:05:10]
<Liizzii-chan> aah, was confused as to why
there were two, and loading that page and seeing "the wiki has
moved" right at the top cleared that confusion right up
L327[22:05:26]
<Forsaken
Maiden> ❤️
L328[22:05:51]
<Liizzii-chan> I'm pretty sure both wikis
pre-date the discord
L330[22:05:57] <Amanda> Elfi: date night
goals: catgirlification appointment with your partner while they
get their bottom surgery and wolfgirlification
L331[22:06:05] <Elfi> oooh
L333[22:06:51]
<Forsaken
Maiden> ❤️ ❤️
L336[22:07:32]
<Forsaken
Maiden> yayyy
L337[22:07:46]
<Forsaken
Maiden> now that the mc-stuff all works, i can work on the
web-frontend 😄
L338[22:07:55]
<Forsaken
Maiden> thank you all for your time and help ❤️
L339[22:08:00] <Liizzii> np
L340[22:08:02]
<Forsaken
Maiden> I'll be going to bed now
L341[22:09:31] <Liizzii> and yeah, i was
correct. going by the date on the github stuff, the current wiki
pre-dates the discord. Pretty sure Michiyo was the one who created
it initially, she "joined" the server on the 13th of
December, 2015 (8 years ago... wow). I joined the discord about 10
minutes later lol
L342[22:09:56] <Liizzii> discord was very
different back then
L343[22:15:58]
<Mimiru>
Yeah, I created the Discord. I passed the owner role to you though
when I was going to drop all MC stuff, but then folks convinced me
to stay
L344[22:23:21] <Liizzii> kinda funny how
i've become either the keeper/owner or a very respected admin for
any place i start in that doesn't already have established
moderation stuff lol
L345[22:24:54] <Liizzii> got admin on
essentially 4 servers by being good and knowledgable on discord's
stuff and being somewhat established on the server that the other 4
sorta loosely came from
L346[22:25:23] <Izzy> aligned with
discord's strategy isn't it?
L347[22:25:52] <Liizzii> not sure what you
mean by that
L348[22:26:25] <Izzy> a little different
to the usual "make a discord guild for a community you don't
have any authority in so you and your buddies can have the
authority" but similar
L349[22:26:49] <Liizzii> aah
L350[22:28:24] <Liizzii> eh, I think my
habit of keeping somewhat to myself and not getting myself involved
in random internet drama has helped my voice for some bits carry
over more because i have no stake in whatever issue is hot at the
time or something
L351[22:28:41] <Liizzii> though adhd go
brr and i don't have much motivation to fully moderate all the
places
L352[22:29:21] <Liizzii> especially the 9k
member server that the aforementioned 4 spawned from
L353[22:29:40] <Liizzii> though we have a
moderation team there so i don't need to look at it as much
L354[22:30:05] <Liizzii> i just
essentially lurk in the shadows and improve anti-spam stuff
