L180[12:35:55] <Vexatos> as is everything else in the universe
L181[12:36:10] <payonel> i'm just curious when/where the rule exists
L182[12:36:54] <dequbed> payonel: ELF defines memory layout, the kernel decides how to map vmem to phys mem and the amd64 spec describes a few things about memory, e.g. some corder points of the MMU.
L183[12:37:06] <dequbed> So; yes.
L184[12:37:20] <payonel> that's not what i'm asking
L185[12:37:25] <payonel> let me rephrase
L186[12:37:33] <Vexatos> payonel, it has existed since the 1960s I think and it is an abstraction of electron density functional theory to make it easier to interpret
L187[12:38:15] <payonel> ELF defines where to put sections in memory, the kernel manages how those addresses map from virt to phys space
L188[12:38:29] <payonel> but who/what says that the running progbits is allowed to set/read aribitrary locations
L189[12:38:46] <payonel> for example, the ELF doesn't have info about the stack size, nor where it starts
L190[12:38:53] <payonel> at least, i haven't seen that
L191[12:41:48] <payonel> i'm reading this: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/521960/how-does-the-elf-loader-determine-the-initial-stack-size/522133
L192[12:43:30] <payonel> hmm, wasnt enough info
L193[12:43:36] <payonel> interesting :)
L194[12:43:47] <dequbed> payonel: I'm asserting you're talking about modern x86. In that case memory can be and usually is fully virtualized in hw. If you write to a random virtual address that page is either loaded by the MMU for the current exec context or not. If it is and marked writeable the write passes. If it isn't thats a page fault, elevated to the kernel which will then do arbitrary things and may load the page.
L195[12:44:19] <dequbed> If you *are* the kernel then look up how your MMU works because it's defining what happens to random memory writes from kernel space.
L196[12:46:06] <dequbed> MMIO can bypass the MMU and return rather arbitrary values and/or damage devices, non-existant phys memory should give you an exception, non-mapped virt mem as well but a different one. That's what I think the x86 spec requires at least. I don't have it at hand right now but I can look it up if you need it.
L197[12:46:14] <payonel> 'mem is fully virt in hw' yep. but doesn't tell me about access limits. 'if it is marked writeable' but the elf doesn't define all memory ranges from 0 to size_t(-1) as writeable or not. nor would i expect the to be in charge of that. (cont)
L198[12:46:38] <payonel> so you say the kernel will 'do arbitrary things' ok sure. but what specifically about ranges a user process should be able to write to?
L199[12:46:59] <dequbed> payonel: It's not. The ELF just defines memory layout to the linker and loader. What happens after either is a different story.
L200[12:47:00] <payonel> and no, i'm not talking about how page faults work, nor how virt maps to hw
L201[12:47:31] <AmandaC> payonel: if I'm parsing what you're asking correctly, it's essentially part of the Kernel <-> Userspace ABI
L202[12:48:00] <Mimiru> AmandaC, got the discord/game bridges to IRC here on Esper
L203[12:48:05] <AmandaC> Kernel dicatets, but doesn't communicat that in any way to the program, it's just agreed upon beforehand
L204[12:48:10] <Mimiru> tossed you an /invite if you wanna join there to avoid the discord side of things :P
L205[12:48:27] <dequbed> payonel: Well, the kernel can do pretty much anything it wants with that page fault. If you want to know specifically what happens you need to at least tell us what Kernel you are using :p
L206[12:48:32] <payonel> ok, so anyone know where the linux kernel specifically dictates the memory access range (a virtual address range) a user process should be allowed to use?
L207[12:49:29] <payonel> dequbed: looking up in my chat history, you are right, i didn't specify linux (4.15) (amd64)
L208[12:49:34] <AmandaC> Mimiru: ah, that answers that. I wasn't sure if you and Izaya just have very similar & clinical ideas of inviting people to channels, or if IRCCloud displays invites... weird.
L209[12:49:36] <payonel> but that's the only one i care about
L210[12:49:57] <Mimiru> I tossed the invite was going to message you, then got called away to work
L211[12:50:02] <Mimiru> nasty 4 letter word.
L212[12:50:10] <AmandaC> haha
L213[12:50:26] <dequbed> payonel: For a running process, pmap (`man 1 pmap`) re /proc/<PID>/maps . If you want to know beforehand it depends on your kernel allocator and a few things in your kernel config :/
L214[12:51:19] <payonel> dequbed: perfect, thank you

L217[12:51:30] <payonel> i can investigate from there to see what defines/limits those ranges
L218[12:51:40] <SquidDev> Darn, I don't understand this system at all :/.
L219[12:52:00] <dequbed> payonel: On most distros I think you can tweak some things like stack size & position from sysctl.
L220[12:54:35] <AmandaC> Mimiru: You didn't have to do that, I've just been lazy-loading in my chat apps after a nuke-and-pave, and discord isn't used directly by me very ofte
